Shaina M. Rubino, MD

Shaina M. Rubino, MD, ophthalmologist at North Carolina Retina Associates

"As retina specialists, we have a great opportunity to fight blinding diseases while developing long-term relationships with patients. Most of the diseases we treat have a profound impact on vision and quality of life, but treatment modalities are rapidly evolving and the future is very bright. Helping patients understand their options, make informed decisions, and overcome their hurdles will always be the most rewarding part of my career."

Dr. Rubino began her academic career as an undergraduate at New York University, where she studied Romance Languages and Chemistry. She remained in the metropolitan area for medical school, graduating from New York Medical College. She completed her residency in Ophthalmology at Wake Forest University, where she served as a Chief Resident, and her fellowship at VitreoRetinal Surgery P.A. in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Her research interests include diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, and vascular disease. Her work on these topics has been presented at both national and international meetings. She has also published several articles in peer-reviewed journals. Clinically, she also focuses on age-related macular degeneration, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and secondary intraocular lenses.

Dr. Rubino is also passionate about providing high quality, equitable care. She has participated in multiple departmental and hospital-wide quality initiatives, and previously served on the executive board of the Wake Forest Medical Center’s Resident Quality Improvement Committee. Her humanitarian efforts have included both medical and non-medical pursuits, spanning from volunteering at a children’s hospital in France to surgical brigades in Honduras. Leaning on her background in languages, she strives for increasingly better ways to communicate with patients, incorporating Spanish, French, and more recently, American Sign Language.

Along with her husband, Dr. Rubino enjoys traveling and cooking heirloom recipes.

Dr. Rubino is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is an active member of both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retinal Specialists.
