Jonathan T. Caranfa, MD, PharmD
“Throughout my time as a pharmacist, I had the privilege of being impacted by
hundreds of patients’ stories, whose lives were altered by gradually
deteriorating eyesight. These stories continued to personally resonate with
me, and I desired a career that would allow me to take a more hands-on
approach to patients’ health. As I transitioned from pharmacist to physician I
could not think of a more rewarding career than devoting my time and skills to
a lifetime of helping patients preserve their sight.”
Dr. Caranfa’s perspective on patient care has also been shaped by significant
health experiences within his own family. Watching his grandfather live with
vision loss from macular degeneration and supporting his father-in-law
through cancer gave him a deeply personal appreciation for the ways illness
can affect an entire family. These experiences continue to inform the
compassion, perspective, and understanding he brings to his relationships
with patients and their loved ones.
Prior to pursuing medicine, Dr. Caranfa earned his PharmD from the
University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy, where he graduated first in his
class. After a brief career as a pharmacist, he went on to earn his MD from the
University of Connecticut School of Medicine. While in medical school, Dr.
Caranfa earned numerous honors including awards for research,
professionalism, patient care and was inducted into the Gold Humanism and
Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Medical societies. He later completed his
residency in Ophthalmology at the Tufts New England Eye Center in Boston
followed by vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the combined Tufts New
England Eye Center & Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston program in Boston,
MA.
Dr. Caranfa is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is
a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American
Society of Retina Specialists. He specializes in treating patients with a wide
range of retinal conditions, including macular degeneration, diabetic
retinopathy, retinal vascular disease, retinal detachments, macular holes,
epiretinal membranes, and secondary intraocular lens implantation. Dr. Caranfa has authored multiple book chapters and over 20 peer-reviewed
publications.
In his spare time, Dr. Caranfa enjoys spending time with his wife and three
children. He also enjoys carpentry, woodworking, and is an avid aquarist.
